Tibetan silver trade rupee

Tibet Rupee ND (1911-16,1930-33)

Many types

This florin sized silver coin turns out to be one of those with no mintage figures available in the Krause catalogue, although we can find the fineness (.700) and a little note that says two reverse varieties exist and an example with two obverses exists!

There is an excellent photographic reference for the different types at numista.com but even that source has no real information on the different reverse designs…

In any case numista did help in pinning down the coin in the photos (Y#3.2) – it’s the ‘collar’ and ‘vertical rosette’ combination, a little rough around the edges…whatever, it’s a great coin!

As made there was no mention of a date in the design, still it is known that they were produced in two runs, 1911-16 and 1930-33.

The earlier run took place at Chengdu Mint, aka Szechuan Mint, accordingly the coins are sometimes called Szechuan Rupees.

Happy Collecting!
