Far, far away
From the perspective of England during the age of sail, the far colonies is an apt description of those settlements established in the Great South Land of the roughly late 1700s – early 1800s.
After all, New South Wales and Van Diemen’s Land were even further away than India and Ceylon.
Limited supply
Given that colonies were usually left on their own in terms of currency, it’s interesting that a few issues of British copper coins of the 1850s era were specifically tagged as Far Colonies issues, as can be seen in Krause ( Standard Catalog of World Coins 1801-1900 ).
Specifically the pennies from 1846, 1847 and 1851 – a nice little set to put together!
These coins were intended for use in distant shores and would certainly have been gratefully accepted on arrival – at this time there was little copper coinage available in Australia, in fact businesses resorted to producing tokens to make up the shortfall… but that’s a whole other collecting world, pages and pages of it !
Happy Collecting!
